I have been advised to remove norton from my Vista based machine as it slows down the whole system (and the PC is old and slow as it is)

What should I replace it with?

I've got the machine permanantly disconnected from the net, so no surfing, however, files will be coming on and off via a usb stick which may have come from the web

I want a quick, light, effective program.

Definitely right about Norton. All the major virus programs are far too bloated now and slow machines way down.

I have been using Comodo for some time and it is very good. You can set it to automatically check USB sticks when the are connected

When you uninstall it,
make sure you use the norton removal tool
> https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=en&ct=us <

Panda Cloud Antivirus > http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/#!/free-antivirus-download
is the lightest you can get,
it is free and has a higher proactive and reactive detection rates than
kaspersky, norton and several others.

Microsoft Security Essentials will suit your needs it is light works in the background and is effective.

Coupled with Widows Firewall and you will be protected.

It will scan USBs

MSE is also free!

you can actually download free anti virus programmes from the internet however i think it depends on your internet provider. I use norton though and it does not slow the computer or laptop down in anyway.

If the PC is not connected to the net, you don't require an antivirus program, an antivirus program is only as good as it data base without internet it won't update therefore it's data base will be empty.

files will be coming on and off via a usb stick which may have come from the web - then scan the USB with the PC your downloading from before putting the USB into the PC which has no net.

The only other way you could do it, is put an antivirus program on the USB which you can update on a PC which is connected to the net.

go to add & remove & remove norton, then save norton removal tool on USB & run it, if the PC is slow why not save free Ccleaner on the USB & put it on the PC & run It !
