Default am i missing the point or something with web development

My main interest is not currently creating pretty web pages. I want to create chatrooms.
I successfully turned my computer into a server, got a basic java client on one machine connecting over the internet to the server on another machine with sockets.

Now I have the basics of sockets i know i could send any kind of object and do virtually anything.

So anyway I thought about how i want to create my chatroom, what i came up with eventually was a java applet for people who want to chat using a webpage, but my actual server will just be a c# application, with a gui because i prefer gui's to command lines, on my web-server.

It feels almost as if i have moved completely away from what i once thought of as web development, and am just writing more of a windows application in c# which i do a lot.

Is there something fundamentally flawed with my thinking????? it seems like using c# to write my socket server is the best option, i love the features.

You're just doing ASP.NET programming. You still do HTML, JavaScript, and CSS but C# is on the server. It's basically windows forms using HTML and all instead of xaml
