Default separate large amounts of data on excel

Presently I am trying to create a speadsheet using data taken from a program which exports information as a .txt file.I am looking for a way to copy and paste these data to an excel spreadsheet, but have everything show up in different cells.

To elaborate:
The data I am copying is listed as:

xxxx, yyyy yyyy, zzzz, bbbb

It is in a .txt file and I am seeking a means of copying and pasting the information into separate cells so column 1 has x, column 2 y, column 3 z ans columb 4 b. I have thousands of entries to sort through.

As for my knowledge on excel, I'd say I'm fairly well versed, but would appreciate it if you could explain it to me in as simplest of terms as possible.

Thanks.

Default separate large amounts of data on excel

Rename the file as a .CSV (comma separated values) and open with excel.
