Default entry-level book for programming c

I have decided to start learning how to program and I need an excellent textbook to teach me the basics. I have no previous experience in any programming language. If you think C isn't a good beginner's language, please point me in a good direction (with a book if possible).

I plan on working in the sciences so Matlab, Mathematica, and FORTRAN are commonly used.
