Default Domain registration, how do big corporations do it and why can't I

I obviously have no idea how all this stuff works, but if a site doesn't exist and is not owned by any one man...than what is required for a site to exist?

I understand that I could go to any domain registration and get the site (for a small fee) But what is it that they do to obtain that site and then give it to me.

Shouldn't there be a way to cut the middle man and just have the site for myself? I'm guessing there would probably be something more expensive in order to do such a thing. I'd like to know what that is if at all possible.

(And please forgive my ignorance if what I'm saying is actually just laughable stupidity on my part for not knowing something)
