I received an email the other day from a no-reply sender (no-reply-6381@mailsixau.com). The subject was "Mail A Quote" and the only text was the following:

""The artist alone sees spirits. But after he has told of their appearing to him, everybody sees them.."

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe"

Does anybody know if there is some service online that allows people to send quotes anonymously?

Thanks.
That's crazy that other people are getting them too. Mine was to a .edu email address as well; was everybody's? And my quote was super relevant to me too; I thought it was directed toward me anonymously, which is why I worded my question as though it was a service. Sounds like it might just be a really pleasant spambot though.

I just got one of these too. Except it says;

""The grim fact is that we prepare for war like precocious giants, and for peace like retarded pygmies.."

- Lester B. Pearson"

How very strange.

Ditto, except it was from no-reply-57379@mailtwoau.com and the quote was:

"There are obviously legal restrictions on what you can do on TV in the States,
as there are everywhere.."

- Dave Rowntree

The weirdest part was that it was sent to my university of Illinois email address, which I have absolutely NEVER used to sign up for anything, so I don't see how it could end up on a mailing list.

Mine was:

"I think one of the basic tasks in life - one of the nice things we can do for each other - is to take things that are horrible and scary and make them acceptable and less frightening and, if possible, funny. It feels great to succeed at that.."

- Julia Sweeney

Very odd. It's a plain text message so I don't see how it could have a weird html bomb or anything like that, though perhaps I'm wrong. There's no unsubscribe or opt-out option, meaning it's not a legit commercial service.

I also got one today, at a rarely-used .edu email address. Maybe someone is sending lots of emails to random combinations of names, seeing which ones bounce, and saving the rest as valid, active addresses? I can't see what other purpose a plain text email would be serving, other than perhaps probing other aspects of different institution's email infrastructure. The purpose of the different quotes could be to evade spam filters.

My random (particularly weird) quote:
"The time has come for all evangelists to practice full financial disclosure. The world is watching how we walk and how we talk. We must have the highest standards of morality, ethics and integrity if we are to continue to have influence.."

- Billy Graham

Mine said: "A beauty is a woman you notice a charmer is one who notices you.." ... I'm so vain ... I definitely thought this quote was about me.

Does anyone know what mail-a-quote is and has anyone ever received one? I received mine today through my .edu email, at 5:00pm. It was, ""I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I
established yesterday or some previous day.."

- James Joyce

From: Mail a Quote

This quote seemed relevant... in that I needed it.

Thoughts?

I actually just got one too.....saying:

"Women are so unforgiving of themselves. We don't recognize our own beauty because we're too busy comparing ourselves to other people.."

- Kelly Osbourne

Weird how everyone has a different quote and was emailed to .edu address

I also recieved one to my .edu address (from no-reply-48618@mailfiveya.com). At first I just assumed it must have been initiated from a course instructor or TA, because the quote was freakishly relevant to a paper I wrote, that was just graded. guess it is some kind of spam and a strange coincidence...

"I'm just glad I was able to return to some of that innocence and beauty I had as a child when I started my own family, and my children brought me back some of that spirit.."

- Angelina Jolie

WA state student here.

I've been looking online for the source as well. I received one with the same "m.o."--and that sense of personal relevance (although perhaps that\'s in the nature of quotes:
"The art of motherhood involves much silent, unobtrusive self-denial, an hourly devotion which finds no detail too minute.."

- Honore de Balzac

perhaps these aren\'t entirely random-- do we share an educational institution? possibly in North Carolina?
